William Atwood

September 2, 1953 — September 27, 2023

William Kent Atwood, 70, was called home to heaven on September 27, 2023, at Hickory Point Christian Village in Forsyth, IL.

Kent was born to William Lee (“Bill”) and Betty Lou Atwood on September 2, 1953, in Decatur.

As a student at Eastern Illinois University, Kent met Kathleen McCollum.  She was the love of his life, and they married on June 19, 1976, in Homewood, IL.  His devotion to her never ceased.

Kent and Kathy made a home in central Illinois, welcoming twins (Mike and Amy).

Kent had a quiet but steady faith, quick wit, and a great sense of humor.  He loved to work with his hands and enjoyed tinkering in his shop and rehabbing his latest find from the local auction.  He also loved to learn and to teach, impacting countless students over decades as an industrial technology teacher at several schools in the area.  He entered the corporate world for a short time, managing the service department at RV Evans.  But he missed his students and eventually returned to the classroom to finish his career.  Kent was proud beyond words of his son and daughter and adored his seven grandchildren, whom he never hesitated to delight with a funny face or special gift.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathy, his mother and father, and his brother, Kerry (“K”).

Kent is survived by his two children, Mike (Brittany) Atwood of Monticello, IL, and Amy (Sara) Atwood of Seattle, WA; his grandchildren, William, Joshua, and Andrew, and Steven, Katelyn, Jonathan, and Elizabeth; brothers Terry (Teri) Atwood and Gayle Atwood of Decatur; sisters Cheryl Rothwell of Laporte, IN, and Janice (Shane) Endrizzi of Harristown, IL; along with several cousins, nieces, nephews, and long-time friends.

Funeral services will be held at 10 AM, Tuesday, October 3 rd , at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 1 Bachrach Ct, Decatur, IL, with burial following at Harristown Cemetery.  Visitation is from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM on Monday, October 2 nd , at Brintlinger & Earl Funeral Home, 2827 N. Oakland Ave, Decatur, IL, and one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Unity Christian School in Decatur, IL, the Northeast Community Fund in Decatur, IL, or the American Heart Association.
