Wesley L. Mendenhall, 98, of Decatur, IL. passed away at 3:18 AM on Sunday, May 14, 2017 in Hickory Point Christian Village. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM Thursday (05-18-2017) at Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Home, Decatur, IL. Visitation will be held Wednesday (05-17-2017) from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the funeral home with Masonic Rites at 7:00. Burial will be in Friends Creek Cemetery, Argenta, IL. Military rites will be conducted by the Macon County Honor Guard.Memorials may be made to: Grace United Methodist Church or Shriners Hospitals for Children.Wesley was born on October 26, 1918 the son of John Wesley Mendenhall and Emma Mae (Mowry) Mendenhall. He married Mary L. Taylor on June 16, 1940 in Decatur, IL. Mary preceded him in death on February 9, 2015.Wesley was raised in Missouri, and moved to Illinois in his late teen years. He proudly served his country in the Navy during WWII. Wesley started his work career in Illinois as a Milkman for Ridgleydale Dairy in Decatur where he delivered milk in a horse-drawn milk truck. He later worked for Taylor & Harder Dairy and Sunshine Dairy. He later began a career at Decatur’s Caterpillar facility, retiring after 20 plus years in the Material Control Department. He and his wife also owned and operated the Dairy Queen in Monticello in the early 50’s.Wesley loved hunting, fishing, gardening, and being a handyman, assisting many people in Decatur. He owned and renovated many rental properties over the years. He was also an avid Cardinal fan. Wesley was a former member of Great Light Lodge #1064, A.F. & A.M. and later was a member of Stephen Decatur Lodge #979, A.F. & A.M., Valley of Springfield Scottish Rite, Ansar Shrine, Decatur Shrine Club and Grace United Methodist Church.He is survived by his son Roger (Karen) Mendenhall of Falcon, CO; daughter, Mary Carolyn (Keith) Flesner of Mt Zion, IL; 7 brothers, 1 sister, 9 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren and special friend Jean.He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, multiple brothers and sisters and a grandson.Wesley was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather and friend. He leaves his family with many fond memories and will truly be missed.A special thanks to the staff at Primrose for their special care and concern over the past two years. "
