CUSTOM DEATH NOTICE Wayne L. Mellinger, 93, of Decatur, died at 11:30 PM Monday, August 17, 2009 at Heartland of Decatur. A memorial service will be held 10:30 AM, Monday, August 31, 2009 at Central Christian Church, with Rev. Charles Watkins officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service. Mr. Mellinger has donated his body to SIU School of Medicine. Memorial contributions have been suggested to Central Christian Church.Wayne was born April 30, 1916, in Milmine, IL the son of Frank and Katherine (Wrightsman) Mellinger. He married Edith G. Gray September 10, 1938 in Decatur. Wayne was an enlisted member of the Army Air Corp and served during WWII. After his military career Wayne worked for Production Credit Corporation, a credit manager for Morehouse and Wells and later worked for Wabash and N and W Railroads (Norfolk Southern) where he retired after 26 years of service in 1980.Wayne was a member of Central Christian Church, a graduate from Champaign High School, and attended Browns Business College. He loved horses, enjoyed bowling, reading and watching television. Wayne is survived by his wife Edith; son, Melvyn W. Mellinger and wife Jane of Sautee Nacoochee, Georgia; daughter, Catherine Lou Keltner and husband Bruce of Broken Arrow, OK; eight grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and two sisters.Brintlinger & Earl Funeral Home has been entrusted with Waynes care.The family sincerely appreciates all the compassionate and loving care given by the staff at Heartland of Decatur, especially by the nurses, CNAs and activity personnel.Condolences may be left to the family at www.brintlingerandearl.com "
