MT ZION - Wayne S. Kempshall, 100, of Mt. Zion formerly of Westerville, Ohio passed away January 18, 2009 at Heartland of Decatur, Decatur, IL surrounded by his family. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Saturday, January 24, 2009 at , Central College Presbyterian Church, 975 S. Sunbury Rd., Westerville, Ohio, 43081. Visitation will be from 5 - 7 PM Friday January 23, 2009 at the Moreland Funeral Home, 55 E. Schrock Rd. Westerville, Ohio, 43081. Burial will be at Blendon Cemetery, Westerville, Ohio.In lieu of flowers memorials have been suggested to Central College Presbyterian Church, 975 S. Sunbury Rd., Westerville, Ohio, 43801 or to the donors choice..Wayne was born in Maroa, IL, September 12, 1908 the son of William Lee and Edna (Schenck) Kempshall. After graduation from Maroa High Shool he attended Hanover College in Madison, Indiana, Millikin University and the University of Colorado. He obtained his teachers certificate and taught and coached in Clinton, IL.Wayne married Ruth Brown Kempshall August 7, 1937 in Streator, IL. Ruth died August 28, 2006. Wayne was drafted into the Army in 1943. He served his country in England, France and Germany during WWII. He was a barge captain and was called Doc by his 33rd Harbor Craft buddies.After discharge from the Army in 1946 he became employeed at the Decatur Signal Depot. When the Signal Depot closed he moved to Westerville, Ohio, where he worked for the Defense Construction Supply Center of Columbus until he retired.Wayne was an avid sportsman. He loved hunting dove, pheasant and ducks. Fishing at Lake of Lac du Flambeau, Wisconsin for over forty years was his favorite summertime activity. Sharing his secret fishing spots of the area with his grandsons was a highlight of his life.Wayne loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, watching them grow up, attend school dances and talk about hunting and fishing with his great grandson, Lucas.Wayne is survived by a daughter Ann (Dick) Mayberry of Mt. Zion, four grandchildren Scott (Debbie) of Mt. Zion, Michelle (Scott) Barbee of Oakley, Shawn (Angela) Kempshall of Vandalia, Brian (Robbin) of Cocoa, Florida, daughter-in-law Vickie Aldrich of St. Petersberg, Florida, four great-grandchildren Lucas and Allyson Barbee of Oakley and Brittany and Mariah Mayberry of Mt. Zion.The family would like to give a special thank you to Dr. Kahn for the wonderful care and to the nurses Connie, Sheevel and Angela at Heartland of Decatur, and his home care givers Kathy, Linda and Penny for the compassionate home care.Wayne was preceded in death by parents, wife Ruth, and son Robert (Bob) Kempshall.Wayne will be greatly missed and always remembered by his family and friends for his jokes for all occasions and his philosophy that one should laugh at least once each day.
