Wanda Ruth Day, 84, of Decatur, IL passed away on September 2, 2022, surrounded by her family.
Wanda was born on August 22, 1938 in Clinton, IL to parents Ralph and Bernadine (Tucker) Gibson. Wanda was an “Army brat”, spending her childhood years traveling across the world with her parents. Some of her happiest times were in Wurzburg, Germany where she graduated from high school. The friendships she established in Germany proved to be life- long with frequent reunions and trips among her classmates. In 1961 she married Paul Day and they raised their three children in the Decatur area. Wanda was an amazing mother and grandmother. She spent many hours leading Brownie troops, coaching cheerleading, and watching their sporting events. When she wasn’t with her family, Wanda worked in the banking industry at both Pershing Bank and Hickory Point Bank. She was well known among her friends and neighbors as a talented gardener. She created beautiful and elaborate flower gardens that were enjoyed by all. Mom also had a special love for animals, especially dogs. She never met a dog she didn’t like, and they immediately sensed her kind spirit and were always by her side. Wanda’s final years were impacted by Alzheimer’s, but her strong willed spirit never diminished. What the heart has once known, it will never forget.
Wanda is survived by her children Ronald Day, Jill Crum (Tom), and Jenifer Day (Vic), grandsons, Paul Hassinger (Liz) and Cody Day, great-grandchildren Axton and Mavryk Hassinger all in the Decatur area. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Paul; and grandson Christopher Alex McCoy.
There will be a visitation to celebrate Wanda’s life at Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Home, 2827 N Oakland Av., Decatur, IL. on Tuesday, September 6, 2022 from 10:00 AM-12:00 PM, followed by graveside services at Boiling Springs Cemetery.
Memorials can be made to Decatur and Macon County Animal Shelter Foundation.
