Vincent Arthur Cooling, 95, of Decatur, died Thursday, May 30, 2019, in Decatur, IL. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, June 3, at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Decatur, with the Rector, the Very Rev. Richard Swan, officiating. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. until service time. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests gifts to the memorial fund of St. John’s Episcopal Church or a charity of donor’s choice. Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Homes are assisting the family. Vincent was born near Princeville, IL in 1924, the son of Arthur and Alice Holland Cooling. He married Charlotte “Ettie” Mary Betts in Peoria, IL in December 1948. She preceded him in death in 2013. After his father’s death in 1935, his mother moved the family to England. Vincent received his secondary school education at King Alfred’s Grammar School in Wantage, Oxfordshire, England. He worked at Barclays Bank in Wantage where he met his future wife. Both lived in England thru all of WWII. In 1945, Vincent enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force taking basic training at Fontaine Bleu, France. Upon completion of training he served in England, Germany, and Tripoli, North Africa for 3 years. After being honorably discharged from the service, he earned his B.S. from Bradley University in Peoria, graduating as the class salutatorian in 1952. Vincent joined the public accounting firm of Murphy, Jenne, and Jones in Decatur, retiring in 1984 as the senior partner in their tax department. Vincent was an active member of St. John’s Episcopal Church. He held several lay offices at the church, the last of which was finance director. Vincent is survived by his sons: David (Denise) Cooling of Mattoon, IL, Donald (Veda) Cooling of St. Joseph, IL, Philip Cooling of Decatur, IL; grandchildren: Ryan (Margaret) Cooling of Marion, IL, Sarah (Keith) Morrisson of Charleston, IL, Lindsey (Ryan) Loschen of Ogden, IL, Shelley (Drew) Krumwiede of Paxton, IL, Corey Cooling, Andrew Cooling, and Nicholas (Danielle) Cooling, all of Decatur; 10 great-grandchildren and 2 step-great-grandchildren; sister: Joyce “Pat” Kruskop of Virginia Beach, VA; and numerous nieces and nephews.
