Vernon Dale Mowry, 85, of Decatur, IL. died Saturday, April 8, 2017 in Springfield Memorial Hospital, Springfield, IL. Liturgy Services for Mr. Mowry will be held at 3:00PM, Thursday, April 13,2017 at Brintlinger & Earl Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 1:00PM to 3:00PM before service. Entombment at the Star of Hope Mausoleum in Graceland Cemetery, Decatur, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in care of Jeff Mueller at the Men’s Shelter at Salvation Army, Decatur,IL. Mr. Mowry was born May 10, 1931 in Decatur, IL, the son of Harold & Ada Pearl (Snyder) Mowry. He married Gloria Davis on June 7, 1954 in Decatur, IL. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy on the USS Boxer, CV21. Mr. Mowry was a retired Captain of Station #4 at the Decatur Fire Department after 38 years service. He was a member of the Stephen Decatur Masonic Lodge #979 AF&AM, Retired Firefighters, senior group at Our Lady of Lourdes and loved being a part of the firefighters lunch group. Vernon was a volunteer at the Salvation Army, Good Samaritan, involved in Toys for Tots program, and enjoyed camping, fishing, and boating. Most of all he treasured time spent with his family. Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Gloria; two daughters, Sharon Sowa and Therese Brown (Jeff) all of Decatur; son, Gregory Mowry of Decatur; grandchildren, Christopher Mowry, Gavin Sowa, Lauren Hise (Brown), Joseph Sowa and Connor Brown; Sister, Alta Bishop of Las Vegas, NV; several nieces and nephews and his beloved Yorkie, Robin Ray. He was preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law Stephen Sowa and brothers & sisters. "
