Vada was born November 18,1945 and was the daughter of Elvin Clarence and Lena Katherine (Feezel) Pinkley. She married William Wond on March 8, 1970, in Decatur, IL.
Vada volunteered at the hospital when she was young where she almost had an opportunity to talk to Elvis Presley when an actress from Blue Hawaii was being treated and she asked Vada if she would like to speak to Elvis when she was in her room, because he was getting ready to call her back. They waited and finally asked the operator if there were any calls from Elvis Presley and she said yes someone just called in and we hung up on him because we thought he was pretending to be Elvis. She was so upset that she almost got to talk to Elvis, and she told this story for many years to her family. She LOVED Elvis Presley and would wear Elvis clothes and purses everywhere she went. She did get to see him in concert before he passed. She made sure the first words of her grandchildren were not mom or dad, but Elvis. She loved picking her grandkids up with Elvis playing so loud that you could hear it down the road. We will cherish these memories of Vada and her love for Elvis.
Vada worked at Dr. Williams’ office where she made many long-lasting friends with his patients and staff.
Vada and her husband Bill owned Hourans Florist, (over a 100-year-old business) and then in 1984 they opened their second florist for Vada in Brettwood Village. (Decatur Florist.) She later moved Decatur Florist to Downtown Decatur. She was active in the Illinois State Florists Association, volunteering with her husband at every convention for the past 35 years. The shop was also a sponsor for the Decatur Celebration for many years. She and her husband decorated the Old State Capital in Springfield twice. She donated many flowers and money to local charities and organizations over the years.
While she ran Decatur Florist downtown, she was on the Downtown Decatur Council later City Center Decatur. She helped run Farmers Market and made many long-lasting friends from other local downtown merchants. She loved bringing fresh produce home every Saturday for the grandkids from her favorite local farmers. She loved being a part of growing downtown Decatur. She was a member of Altrusa Women's club where she served in many positions and helped raise money for many fundraisers for literacy. She worked at the wine cooler booth every year at the Decatur Celebration, and she worked from open to close every day. She was an advocated volunteer for the Lincoln Theatre for many years and would help at the concessions or wherever she was needed. She is a member of St. John's Lutheran Church.
She is survived by her daughter Tinamarie (Todd Messamore) Deetz, Terrific Grandchildren Kaitlyn, Colton, Rowan, Isabella, Ava; Step Grandchildren Kain Deetz and Ryan Deetz; brother Stephen C. Pinkley and wife (Cheryl); sister Ellen D. Henton and husband, (Larry); brothers-in-law Henry Richard Wond (Pat), Michael Wond; and many wonderful nieces and nephews that she loved very much.
Vada was preceded in death by her parents, her husband William Wond; her twin sister Sara Pinkley.
Vada touched the lives of so many, and we will miss her so very much
