Stephen Earl Mitchell was born to R. Earl Mitchell and Martha Hinshaw Mitchell on April 9, 1941 in Shelbyville, Indiana and passed away on March 31, 2024, at 8:37 PM.
A memorial service will be 10:00 AM, Saturday, April 6, 2024 at Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Home, Decatur. A Gathering of friends and family will begin 1 hour prior to service from 9:00 - 10:00 AM., Saturday, at the funeral home. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, that donations be made to the First United Methodist Church Decatur, Illinois.
Raised in Shelbyville, Indiana until 1958 moving to Boswell, Indiana when he was 16 years old. It was there that he met Wanda Nern. The high-school sweethearts married while both were students at Purdue in 1962. After pharmacy school, Steve worked for Osco Drug, then Walgreens for 48 years. They were married for 61 years and have four children; Dr. Jon Mitchell (Aberdeen, SD), Stephanie Cruse (Decatur, IL), Amy Brown & husband Jeffrey (Blue Mound), and Tara Foster & husband Scott (Overland Park, KS). Steve had 6 grandchildren; Marshall and Walker Brown, Stephen and Joshua Cruse, and Simon and Elyse Foster.
In high school, Steve excelled at golf, track, and science, then the swim team at Purdue. Steve was a scout commissioner in the boy scouts for 5 years, loved the outdoors, claimed to be an expert morel hunter. Later in life he enjoyed golfing and reading.
He was a husband, father, son, pharmacist, and friend. The teasing wit, easy laugh, killer euchre hand, and cool head for advice made him a beloved part of our family, and we will miss him terribly.
