Richard Shorey

August 17, 1927 — January 20, 2013

Richard E. Shorey, 85, Decatur, Illinois knocked on Heaven's Door, Sunday (January 20th, 2013) offering his helping hand and his ability to fix anything with "wire, pliers, and duct tape." A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, January 26, 2013 at Macon Lodge #8, 1650 Huston Drive, Decatur, Illinois from 1P.M. to 4P.M. Masonic Rites will be given at 1P.M. (all are welcome), with a gathering of family and friends. Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Home is assisting the family. In lieu of flowers please send memorial contributions to the Shriners Children's Hospital. Richard was born August 17, 1927 in Corrina, Maine, the son of Elmer and Mable Shorey. He married Lucy Harlow May 8, 1948 in New York, New York. Dick served in the United States Marine Corp during WWII, worked for Otis Elevator for 40 years retiring in 1992. He was a member of the VFW Post 99, and QMA (Quarter Midgets of America), and a Life Member of Macon Lodge #8. Richard is survived by his wife, Lu; daughter and son-in-law, Diane and James G. Soules; grandsons, James R. (Jimmie) Soules, Joshua Soules, Luke Shorey, and Eric Shorey; granddaughter, Barri Shorey; great granddaughters, Stephani (Alex) Cooper, Jillian Shorey, Kailey Shorey; great grandsons, Jaylen Soules, James S. Soules, Ethan Shorey; great-great grandson, Stephon A. Cooper; daughter-in-law, Julie Shorey; and his "Little Sister", Elaine (Howard) Plummer. He was preceded in death by his father; mother; four brothers; three sisters; sons, Richard G. Shorey, and Dennis A. Shorey; and granddaughter, Cynda Soules Cooper. Thanks to all Dad's "friends" he met along his journey, and there are so many. A special thanks to his friends at the Happy Traveler RV Park, Thonotassassa, FL; his buddies at the "Coffee Shop", his "Girls" on 4400 and 6500 at DMH; his "Girls" at Hickory Point Christian Home; all the wonderful doctors at SIU School of Medicine; Prairie Cardiovascular, Ellen; Dr. Junker; Dr. Dilorenzo; Dr. Canham; Dr. Dawood; and Dr. Kershey-God Bless all of you! Grampie had two loves in his life: #1 Gramie; and #2 racing. Together they blessed the lives of so many children by mentoring them in Quarter Midget Racing, teaching them not only the skills of racing, but the importance of Sportsmanship and always helping others. Grampie, thank you for your love, strength, and all you taught us. You've made your final lap, and we know you are smiling in the Winners Circle! "
