CUSTOM DEATH NOTICERichard S. Sandburg, 72, of Decatur, died Thursday, December 18, 2008, in Decatur Memorial Hospital.Private family services will be held at a later date. Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.Memorials may be made to the Humane Society of Decatur-Macon County.Richard was born January 22, 1936, in Chicago, the son of Carl Sandburg, M.D. and Betty (Ganzer) Sandburg. He graduated with honors from the University of Illinois and received his Bachelor of Science in Engineering Physics. Richard then received his Masters degree in Physics from Cornell University. He taught at Illinois State University and the University of Wisconsin.Richard never met a stray cat he couldnt give a good home. He was also a renowned amateur ornithologist who traveled extensively, and worked on several special wildlife projects with the State of Illinois.Richard is survived by his brother Fredrick Sandburg and wife Vickie of Western Springs, IL; sister Mrs. Elizabeth Reising and husband Richard of Decatur.
