Richard was born on March 6, 1932, in Dearborn, Michigan, but moved to Taylorville, Illinois, as a young boy.

After graduating high school, Richard enlisted in the United States Navy, to serve his country in the Korean War. On leave he went home to Taylorville and met the love of his life, Lois Marie Black. Two weeks later they became engaged and married shortly after. They were happily married fifty-nine years.

After serving his country in the Navy, he and Lois established Garriott’s Antiques and later opened a storefront in Argenta, Illinois. Richard was an antique dealer for fifty years and had a love of fine antiques.

Richard passed peacefully in his home in Argenta, Illinois at the age of ninety-four (94). He was a beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, and uncle to his family. He was rich in family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Black Garriott, parents, Myrle and Betty Garriott, brother Robert Garriott, and sisters, Phyllis Garriott Sams, and Linda Garriott Beckner.

He is survived by his son, David Garriott (Argenta), and daughter, Diane Garriott Whitehouse (Argenta), brother, Jerry Garriott (Michigan), Granddaughters, Linda Whitehouse, Stephanie Garriott Bennett, Kate Whitehouse, Sophia Garriott, nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life is scheduled for Saturday, September 19, 2026, at 11:00 AM at the Friends Creek Community Building, 101 E. Elm, Argenta, IL. There will be a memorial service followed by a luncheon.

As a veteran with a deep love for his country, the family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made, in his honor to the USO and/or Tunnel To Towers.

Richard leaves behind a lifetime of memories, a love of family and a legacy that will continue for generations. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
