Phyllis Lorraine Smith (80) of Mena, AR, passed away at home surrounded by loved ones on December 21, 2023. She was born on November 7, 1943, in Decatur, IL, to her parents Maude and Ellis Smith.
She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the Mennonite College of Nursing - Illinois State and had a successful career as a nurse. She served at St. Mary's Hospital and at several nursing homes in the Decatur area as a Director of Nursing.
Phyllis’s vibrant personality and fun sense of humor lent itself to her ability to turn challenging situations, such as dialysis three times a week, into social gatherings. She enjoyed singing, crafting, sewing, and even had an interest in shooting guns! Phyllis was an active member of Grace Bible Fellowship in Keller, TX, and was consistently involved in her community - volunteering in countless Vacation Bible Schools, Child Evangelism Fellowship, and American Heritage Girls. She had a vibrant faith in the Lord and hopes to reunite with many loved ones in heaven at the Throne of Jesus.
Phyllis was a loving sister to Gale Jannick of Decatur, IL, and a devoted mother to her son, John Stillwell of Mena, AR, and to her daughters, Cara Seggelke and Carol Stillwell, both of Decatur, IL. She adored her eight precious grandchildren: Ryne, Sonya, Zack, Nate, Bryant, Elizabeth, Patrick, and Deborah, as well as her three great-grandchildren and eleven nieces and nephews. Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, Leroy and Leonard.
Visitation will be Thursday, December 28, 2023, from 10 AM to 12 PM at Brintlinger & Earl Funeral Home, located at 2827 N Oakland Ave, Decatur, IL. A funeral service will follow at noon. Phyllis will be laid to rest at Cerro Gordo Township Cemetery with a graveside service. These will be officiated by the pastor of Grace Bible Fellowship, Keller, TX, Greg Massey.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Phyllis' memory to St. Jude Children's Hospitals.
