Peter Steve Markou passed away Sunday, May 6, 2012. Visitation will be held Friday, May 11, 6-8 p.m. with Trisagion prayer service at 7:30 p.m. at Brintlinger & Earl Funeral Home in Decatur. Funeral services will be Saturday, May 12, 11:00 a.m. at The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 570 N. Union, Decatur, with Father David Eynon officiating. Burial will be in North Fork Cemetery, Long Creek Township. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to The Greek Orthodox Church. Survivors include his wife Sandra; daughter Stephanie (Dennis) George; stepdaughter Julie (Bryan) Thompson, stepson Scott (Kelly) Preston; grandsons Cory, Brandon, and Joseph George, Chris Barr, Darren Barr, and Dylan Thompson; granddaughters Kelsey and Hayley Markou, Peyton Thompson; great-grandsons Caleb George and Beckett George; cousins Steve Vovas and Peter Markou, and others in Greece. He was preceded in death by his son Steven P. Markou, M.D. and his wife of 35 years Winsome Sherwin Markou. Pete was born in Keene, N.H. on July 7, 1935, the son of Greek immigrants, Steve and Maria (Vovas) Markou. He graduated from Keene New Hampshire High School and attended Brown University where he played on the football team. In 1956 he married Winsome (Winnie) Sherwin, who preceded him in death in August 1990. After college he was in retail company management for M.H. Fishman Co. He managed 8 stores in various cities along the East Coast. He then worked in retail management for the W.E. Wright stores in Akron, Ohio. In 1973 he moved to Decatur where he established Steven Sales Company, a manufacturers rep company. He retired in 2008. Pete was a member of The Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation in Decatur, Coventry-Akron Lodge 83 AF & AM, and the Scottish Rite Valley of Akron, in Akron, Ohio. Pete coached E&E Pony Baseball for 10 years in Decatur. In the early 1980's he coached all but two baseball players who went on to play baseball for Lakeview High School. He was an avid Boston Red Sox baseball fan, as well as a U of I sports fan. His life revolved either around playing or watching sports. Pete traveled over a million miles while in business, but loved most traveling with his wife Sandra, throughout Europe and the Western Hemisphere. His cheerful good nature and love of family and friends will be sadly missed by all who knew him. "
