Peggy Garrett, 92, of Decatur, IL, passed away on May 31, 2025.
Peggy was born on May 19, 1933, on a farm near Broughton, Illinois, to parents Elvis J. and Eva (Delap) Spence. She attended Hickory Corner rural school, and Norris City High School. In 1951, she married Richard Bryant, and Daniel P. Bryant was born to this union. She married Robert Garrett on December 8, 1955, and had three children: Evelyn R, Brenda K, and Ronald D. Garrett. She is also survived by 5 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Daughter Brenda K. and two great-grandsons, Korbin Garrett and Jordan Garrett preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death were brothers Jearl Dean Spence and Lloyd H. Aud, and sister Martha Trout.
The family moved to Decatur in 1977, and she managed the Lay-Z-Boy Showcase shop until her retirement.
Peg was an artist who created Father Christmas dolls and dressed them in vintage wools and furs. She was a member of the Southern Illinois Artisans Guild, and her creations were old by art shops in southern Illinois and Kentucky. She was often called upon to give presentations of her dolls at Women’s Clubs and other organizations.
She was an avid flower gardener, and some of her happiest hours were passed working in her garden. She loved to travel and during her retirement she visited every state in the lower forty-eight. Most of all, she loved her family. She raised being a mother and grandmother into a fine art.
A celebration of life will be held 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM Wednesday, June 4, 2025, at Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Home in Decatur, IL. A graveside service will be held at 12:00 PM Thursday, June 5, 2025, at Reynoldsburg Cemetery near Vienna, IL. This final resting place held a special place in Peggy’s heart, as this church was established by her great-great-grandfather in 1833.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Brenda K. Garrett Scholarship Fund at Richland Community College.
