Paul Day

December 5, 1934 — February 6, 2014

Paul Edwin "PD" Day, 79, of Decatur, IL passed away on February 6, 2014 in his home, surrounded by his family. Paul was born on December 5, 1934 in Clinton, IL to parents Burl and Gladys Day. Raised with his six brothers and sisters on the family farm, Paul was a member of the Future Farmers of America, a veteran of the U. S. Army and a Free Mason for 48 years. In 1961 he married Wanda Gibson and they raised their three children in the Decatur area. Paul retired from Caterpillar Tractor Company in 1992 after 37 years and was currently working for Jackson Ford as a driver. Regardless of his formal occupation, Paul remained a farmer throughout his life. If you knew "PD", you knew he was a lifelong fan of the St. Louis Cardinals. At the time of his death, Paul still carried the ticket from his first Cardinal game he attended with his father in 1949 in his wallet. Dad was undeniably the leader of our family, a logical problem solver who first helped you fix whatever was wrong and then followed up with his own brand of advice on how to avoid such problems in the future. He was, as he jokingly said "Smarter than the average bear". Paul is survived by his wife of 52 years Wanda; children Ronald Day, Jill Crum and husband Tom, and Jenifer Day and fiancé Shawn Nulf, grandsons, Paul Hassinger and Cody Day all of Decatur, sisters Carole Schove (Lonnie) of Normal, Esther Crotchett (Ken) of Springfield and Margaret Grissom of Maroa, and brother Maurice Day of Maroa. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Marion Day, sister Shirley Day, brother in-law Everett Grissom and grandson Christopher Alex McCoy. Services to celebrate Paul's life will be Monday, February 10, 2014 at 10 am at Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Home, 2827 N Oakland Av., Decatur, IL. Visitation will be Sunday from 4-6 at the funeral home. Interment will be in Boiling Springs Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Macon County Honor Guard. Memorials can be made to St. John's Hospice. "
