Nellie Brookhouzen

Nellie Downs Brookhouzen, 98, of Forsyth, IL, passed away Friday, August 9, 2019 at Hickory Point Christian Village, Forsyth, IL. Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 17, 2019, at Central Christian Church, Decatur, with visitation one hour prior to service time. Burial will be at a later date in Mishawaka, IN. Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Home, Decatur, will be handling the arrangements. Memorials may be made to John F. May Scholarship at Millikin University. Nellie was born February 17, 1921, in White Plains, KY, the daughter of Hugh and Alice Belle (Vick) Cary. She married Robert Alton Downs on February 20, 1942 in South Bend, IN. He preceded her in death on November 27, 1990. She later married Eugene “Dutch” Brookhouzen in Decatur, IL. Nellie loved her job at Soy Captial Bank, where she worked for nearly 20 years as a customer service representative. She enjoyed golfing, playing bridge and traveling. She is survived by her husband Eugene; children: Linda May, Decatur; Larry Downs (Suzanne Crouch), Evansville, IN; stepchildren: Shari Mulvaney (Michael), Springfield; Robert Brookhouzen (Sandy), Decatur, and Teri Starkey (Wes Anderson), Springfield; grandchildren: Marci (Steve) Baumann, Michael (Michelle) May, and Courtney Downs; step-grandchildren: Corey (Cheryl) Brookhouzen, Stacy (Brian) Rudolph, Charlie Speta, Bart (Lilia) Speta, Doug Speta, Jill (James) Akin, and Ted (Emily) Starkey; and 9 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Robert, five siblings, and son-in-law John May. "
