Mona Babcock

January 23, 1925 — January 29, 2025

Mona Babcock, 1925-2025, died January 29, 2025, six days after a huge outpouring of love on her 100th birthday. A memorial service will be held in the Spring.

Mona Wood was born in 1925. She grew up on the family farm a mile east of Cerro Gordo. She and her siblings attended a one-room school down the road from their home. She graduated from Cerro Gordo High School.

When she was eighteen, she took a train from Chicago to Palm Springs, CA to marry her fiance, Roy (Kenny) Babcock who was stationed there in the Army Air Force. After he returned from duty, they settled in Decatur, IL.  They later built a home on the farm outside Cerro Gordo.

Mona was a beautiful person, inside and out. She was kind, deeply spiritual and generous. She was an avid reader, loved good literature, especially poetry. She wrote poetry and designed collages for friends up until the final months of her life.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 75 years, her parents, and her brother. She is survived by her daughter, Cynthia, several beloved nieces, and her sister Barbara. She had countless friends and many friends of her daughter's stayed in touch her whole life.

The family would like to express deep gratitude to Mt. Zion Health and Rehab, Transitions, and to her niece, Aimee, who was an angel to her, helping her in countless ways.

When asked her secret to a long and happy life, she said, "You have to keep your sense of humor."
