Merilee was born December 28, 1949, in Worthington, OH, the daughter of Kenneth and Beatrice (Goodrich) Ault. She was welcomed by big brothers Kacy and Roy and spent most of her childhood in central Ohio with a brief time in New Mexico. She graduated from Westerville High School (Westerville, OH) and remains close with many classmates. She worked for Ashland Chemical Company in Columbus, OH where, thanks to a broken copier, she met a cute co-worker from another floor. That meet-cute worked out and she married Leonard Konich Jr. on September 16, 1983 in Columbus. They welcomed daughter Maggie and moved to Decatur, IL shortly afterwards.
Merilee’s love language was mail and she single handedly kept the greeting card industry and the postal service in business. She never missed an opportunity to wish her loved ones a Happy Easter, Halloween, Thanksgiving, 4th of July, Christmas, Hannukah, or Birthday— and one card to cover a family just wouldn’t do, as a rainbow of envelopes often greeted each person at their mailboxes when mail from “Mama K” arrived. She had a knack for remembering everyone’s special events and favorite things and would likely find a unique gift that matched those preferences. Her favorite recent role was that of “Mimi” to her two granddaughters Susie and Rosie, whom she adored and loved spending time with. Her love was felt in every little thing she did—and there were so many little things.
Survivors include her husband of 41 years, Leonard “Len” Konich Jr.; daughter Maggie (Frank) Fiock; grandchildren Susie and Rosie Fiock; brother Roy (Sherrie) Ault; sister-in-law Lee Ault; and stepsisters Sue Harrison and Vickie Robinson. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, Konich siblings-in-law, adopted family, and dear friends. Merilee was preceded in death by her parents, stepmother Patricia Ault, and brother Kacy Ault.
