Melvin Hackney

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, September 14, 2009 at Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Home with visitation 5-7 p.m. Sunday, September 13, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Macon County Memorial Park, Harristown, IL, with military rites by the Macon County Honor Guard and the U.S. Army Military Honors Guard.Memorials may be made to Resurrection Life Church or New Beginnings Church of God.The family sincerely appreciates all the compassion and care given by DMH Hospice nursing staff, with special thanks to nurse Angie and nurses aide Tina.Sarge was born on January 31, 1936, in Decatur, the son of Ivan Pearl and Mildred (Murray) Hackney. He married Loretta Y. Rollings and she preceded him in death. He later married Leota Lee Funk on February 3, 1968. She preceded him in death on March 5, 2004.Sarge was a U.S. Army veteran, retiring after 20 years of service, and served during the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam war. He was a member of the V.F.W., American Legion Post #105, and ARA, and enjoyed hunting. Sarge worked as a warehouse foreman for Newman & Ullman for 23 years.Surviving are his children Janet L. (Rev. Dan) Spruell of Decatur, IL, Terri M. (Rich) Brown of Marietta, GA, Michael D. (Chris) Hackney of Decatur, IL, Carle F.(Tanya) Smith of Decatur, IL, Kerry S. Hackney of Decatur, IL, Laura E. (Tom) Neeley of Decatur, IL, Cindy K. (Sgt. Major Eric) Kilianski of Madison, AL, and Robert E. Hackney of FL. Also surviving are brothers Beryl D Hackney of Decatur, IL, Gary D. Hackney of Decatur, IL and Ivan E. Hackney of Atica, IN; sister Judith E. Spaugh of Lincoln, IL; 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Sarge was preceded in death by his parents, wife Loretta, wife Leota, son Douglas, brothers Kenneth R. and Earl E. Hackney, sisters Linda Brownlee and Mary Lee Gregg, and two grandchildren. "
