Max. G. Roberts, 89, of Cerro Gordo, IL died at 12:12 AM Sunday, September 19, 2010 at Heartland of Decatur.Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Thursday, September 23, 2010 at Cerro Gordo Church of the Brethren, Cerro Gordo, IL . Visitation will be 5 - 7 PM Wednesday, September 22, 2010 at Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Home in Cerro Gordo. Masonic service will be conducted by Cerro Gordo Masonic Lodge # 600 AF& AM 7 PM Wednesday. Full military graveside rites will be conducted by Cerro Gordo American Legion Post # 117 Burial will be in Cerro Gordo Cemetery, Cerro Gordo, IL. Memorials may be made to Cerro Gordo Church of the Brethren or the Lois Roberts Scholarship Fund. Max was born June 21, 1921, at La Place, IL, the son of Clarence & Ruby (Griswold) Roberts. He married Lois M. Buckingham on March 31, 1946, in Cerro Gordo, IL. She passed away May 18, 2006.Max was educated at La Place Grade School, Hammond High School, attended Illinois College at Jacksonville from 1939 - 1940 and Southern Illinois Normal University Carbondale from 1940 - 1941. He worked for Western Electric Co. from 1941-1943; served in the Army Signal Corps attached to the 20th Air Force from 1943 - 1946 in the Mariana Islands (Tinian). He went back to work for Western Electric Co. in June 1946, while attending Millikin University, graduating in 1949, after short stays at Metzler & Sons, Decatur Signal Depot and joining Illinois Bell in Peoria in 1955. Max spent 27 years with Illinois Bell as a technician , before leaving to go with Paul Revere Insurance Co. After 5 years with Paul Revere, he earned his real estate brokers license, working for Shipman Realty, but later joining the Cerro Gordo School System as Maintenance Director, working in that capacity for 13 years, until retirement. Max was a member of the Cerro Gordo Church of the Brethren as a local moderator, treasurer, deacon, and Sunday School teacher during life long member. Max, memorized the Sermon On The Mount (Matthew, Chapters 5, 6 & 7). He rededicated his life to the Lord in 1986 and had a "Victory in Jesus" each day, meditating on His Word. He was Past President, Treasurer and Secretary of the Cerro Gordo Lions Club; over 50 year member of the Cerro Gordo Masonic Lodge # 600 AF & AM over 50 year member of the Bloomington Consistory, former Cerro Gordo Village Clerk, Cerro Gordo Township Assessor for 30 years and a Charter Member of the Cerro Gordo Booster's Club. He is survived by his daughters Karen (John) Clinton of Mill Valley, CA, Christine (Victor) Cox of Champaign, Martha Roberts of Goreville, IL; son Alan Roberts of Taylorville, IL; granddaughters Megan Clinton of San Rafael, CA, Amber (Todd) Miller of Denver, CO, grandsons Jay (Julie) Reed of San Jose, CA, Nathan Cox and fiance Kristan Bain of Calgary, Canada and Andrew Cox of Carbondale, IL; sisters Virginia (Luther) West of Plano, TX, Mary L. Berry of Lompoc, CA. And three great grandchildren Jackson Max, Theodore and Annabelle.He was preceded in death by his parents, and wife Lois, brothers Wayne and Kenneth, sister Dorma.
