Martin Gerald Mooney, 81, of Warrensburg, IL, passed away Wednesday, June 19, 2024, surrounded by his family.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 1:00 PM, Tuesday, June 25, at our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Decatur, with Father Michael Friedel, celebrant. Visitation will be 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM noon, Tuesday, June 25, at Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Home, Decatur. Burial will be in Illini Cemetery, Warrensburg, IL, with military honors by U.S. Army National Guard and Macon County Honor Guard. Memorials in Martin’s honor may be made to: Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
Martin was born October 29, 1942, at the family farm, south of Latham, the son of John T. and Frances M. (Roberta) Mooney. He married Susan Stoddard on September 15, 1962 at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Decatur. Martin proudly served our country in the U.S. Army National Guard. He then went to work for Caterpillar, Inc. in Decatur, completing their engineering program and retiring as a Supervisor after 30 years.
Martin was passionate about restoring antique tractors with his brothers, which they then entered into the Macon County Fair, where Martin and his brothers volunteered. He was dedicated to his community, serving as Mayor of Warrensburg, and organizing a food drive for a small community near Grafton, IL during the floods in the mid 90’s. Martin also loved traveling with Sue, taking a variety of road trips and traveling to Florida. His favorite time was spent with his family, and especially his grandkids who were his pride and joy. Martin was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.
Martin is survived by his wife of 62 years, Susan; daughters: Teresa (Mike) Heffernan, Anne (David) Matalonis, and Elizabeth (Jeremy) Helton; grandchildren: Paul Heffernan, Michael (Alexandra) Heffernan, Molly Heffernan, Samantha (Drew) Anderson, Jamisan Matalonis, Frances Helton and Audrey Helton; and great-granddaughter, Eloise Rose Heffernan.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and six brothers: John, Howard, Bill, Richard “Dick”, Lawrence, and David.
