Lionel Kenneth Hunter, 91, of Decatur, died December 2, 2023 at Decatur Memorial Hospital, surrounded by his family.
Funeral service will be 11:30 AM, Thursday, December 7, 2023 at Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Home, Decatur. Visitation will be 10:00 – 11:30 AM, Thursday, at the funeral home. Burial will be in North Fork Cemetery, with military honors by the US Air Force and Macon County Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials in his honor be made to Wesley United Methodist Church or a charity of your choice.
Lionel was born at home on July 6, 1932, the son of Kenneth M. and Delpha (Simmons) Hunter, in Owaneco, Christian County, Illinois.
Lionel proudly served our country in the United States Air Force from 1952-1956 and reached the rank of Staff Sergeant. Two weeks after getting out of the Air Force, he started work at Caterpillar in the Heat Treat Department. He would spend almost 32 years there. He retired in 1987, so he was retired longer than he worked. That was his goal and he more than reached it.
Lionel was a proud member of UAW Local 751, American Legion Post 105, and a 57 year member of the Masonic Lodge, and most recently Argenta Lodge #871, A.F & A.M.
Spinning chickens on the grill and cooking meat in the smoker was his hobby and he was very good at it. His family and others enjoyed many meals with him.
He married Cheri Davis on December 16, 1956 at Antioch Christian Church. They would have celebrated 67 years in December.
He is survived by his wife; daughter, Linda Kay (Brian) Morrell; grandsons: Christopher Brian (Cody) Morrell; Chad Brian (Katie) Morrell and Justin Matthew Morrell; great grandchildren: Michael, Lucas, Melanie, Avery and Emilia Morrell.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Richard Eugene and Merlyn Glenn Hunter; and one grandson, Scott Wesley Morrell.
The family wishes to extend a special thank-you to the nurses and staff on the 3rd, 4 th , and 5 th floors of DMH for helping make his last days easier. Thanks also to Dr. Guaglianone for extending his life with excellent care.
