L. Dale Thompson, 92, of Decatur, IL, died in his home surrounded by his family on Wednesday, November 6, at 3:30 p.m. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 9, 2013, at Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Home, Decatur, IL, with Rev. Dr. Michael Hoy & Pastor Al Weidlich officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to service time at the funeral home. Burial will be in Macon County Memorial Park, Harristown, IL, with military rites. Memorials may be made to AMELCA Food Pantry at First Lutheran Church or Donor's Choice. Dale was born October 5, 1921 in Macon, Illinois to Maurice and Mamie (Belcher) Thompson. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on July 17, 1942 and served in WWII as Quartermaster 2nd class in the South Pacific. Dale was very proud to have served in the U.S. Navy and loved his country. Dale married Sarah Ann Frazee on June 27, 1945. Dale was a member of First Lutheran Church. He retired as an electrician from the IBEW Local 146 and was very proud to belong to the Local 146. Dale enjoyed his retirement by coaching his grandson's baseball team and working in the fields running a combine and picking corn! The past 15 years Dale has been a volunteer at the AMELCA food pantry at First Lutheran Church with St. Peter's AME. He helped to organize the Long Creek Fire Department, served as Captain, and drove the fire engine. Dale also volunteered at St. Mary's Hospital and Auxiliary Police in Decatur. Dale enjoyed his children and every one of his grandchildren very much. On his 80th birthday, he was honored to serve as a Groomsman for his grandson Stephen's wedding. Dale is survived by his wife Ann of 68 years; son Jonathan (Barbara) of Mt. Zion, IL; daughter Linda Williams of Decatur, IL; special daughter Beverly Martin, Temple, TX; grandchildren Timothy Murphy, O'Fallon, IL, Michl Thompson of Mt. Zion, IL, Holly (Tony) Neumann of Iola, WI, Amy Murphy of Scottsdale, AZ; great grandchildren Mathew Murphy of O'Fallon, IL, Gabrielle Murphy of Mascoutah, IL, McKayla Thompson of Mt. Zion, IL, Ashley Ridge of Iola, WI, Braden and Devin Paulson of Iola, WI; great great grandchildren Jayden Jack Ridge of Iola, WI and Layla Rose Murphy of Mascoutah, IL. Dale was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, one sister, grandson Stephen Murphy, and son-in-law Mike Williams. "
