Julie Ann (Lane) MacLean, 82, died July 28, 2008 at Decatur Memorial Hospital. The family is planning a private memorial service at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Decatur Memorial Hospital (6400 West) or the American Red Cross. Julie was born in Peoria, Illinois on October 28, 1925, the daughter of Marie Strehlow Lane and French Lane. She lived in Evanston, Illinois until 1940, attending Roycemore Country Day School through the 1Oth grade. Following her father's passing, Julie and her mother moved to Peoria, where she graduated from Peoria Central High School. She attended Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts for two years before transferring to Northwestern University in 1945, where she graduated in 1947, majoring in Political Science and History. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. Julie married M. D. MacLean on August 6, 1947. Mac's career with Caterpillar, Inc. resulted in relocations from Peoria to Decatur, Peoria, York, Pennsylvania, and finally back to Decatur. Julie was involved in many community activities throughout her adult life. In Peoria, she was elected to the Peoria County Board of Supervisors in the early 1950s and was one of the youngest women members serving in that capacity in the country. She was also a member of the Junior League. In York, she was a member of the Junior League and several civic organizations. In Decatur, she was a member of Junior Welfare, Decatur Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, and Kappa Alumni chapter. Julie's proudest moments were the graduations of her two sons from the U.S. Military Academy (West Point) and their later Army careers. Son French graduated in 1974 and recently retired as a Colonel of Infantry, and served in both Operation Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Son David graduated in 1980 and is currently a Colonel of Armor and Chief, Security Cooperation Division, Strategy, Plans and Policy Directorate, U. S. Central Command. Julie is survived by her husband, Mac; two sons, French and his wife, Olga, of Falls Church, Virginia, and David who lives in Tampa, Florida, as do his daughters, Heather and Megan.
