Joyce Jaye (Hart) Tichenor passed away in peace on Friday, July 12, 2024 at Lincolnshire Place
Memory Care Center in Decatur.
Joyce was born August 13, 1934 in Decatur, the only child of Floyd and Clara (Bolton) Hart. She attended Decatur Public Schools. After graduating from Stephen Decatur High School in 1952, she worked at Sanks Insurance Agency.
She married Robert E. (Bob) Tichenor of Decatur on July 3, 1955. Bob, who preceded her in death, died July 25, 2021.
Together they had four children, Sandra Crandall (Douglas) of Westerville, OH, Cheryl Young (Thomas) of Old Hickory, TN, Steven Tichenor (Cristal) of Saddle Brook, NJ, and Shelley Whiteside (Duane) of Decatur. Joyce had 6 grandchildren, Rachel Young, Dr. Teresa Young (Dr. Richard Laurent), John Crandall, Ellen Crandall, Kristen Tichenor and Shannon Tichenor.
Joyce was a dedicated and accomplished homemaker. She was a great cook and seamstress. She was endlessly talented and was always busy knitting, crocheting, gardening, laying carpet, and refinishing furniture. She also loved making jewelry and crafts. Joyce had a genuine “green thumb” and grew many house plants. She was a great caretaker of her whole family and always kept a tidy and orderly home.
She loved dancing and was an exceptional ballroom dancer. Joyce and Bob took many lessons from Dorothy Foster Dance Studio and attended dances all over Central Illinois. They had a great time together and met many new friends.
Joyce loved all animals and cherished the many dogs that she and Bob adopted over the years.
She adored them all, including all her grand-dogs and great grand-dogs.
She was a member of the Garfield School PTA, a room mother, and a “lunch lady.” She also served as a Brownie and Girl Scout leader. After raising her four children, Joyce started working outside of her home again, starting at Decatur Electronics. She then worked at J.D. Johnson Insurance Agency and retired in 1996 at age 62.
Joyce is survived by her 4 children and 6 grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents and loving husband Robert.
Visitation will be 2:00 – 3:00 PM, Friday, July 19, 2024 at Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Home, Decatur. Service to follow at 3:00 PM at the funeral home. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery.
