Joseph Vernal Biggs of Decatur, passed away in his home on Saturday, August 11, 2018. He was 98 years of age. “Joe” as he was called, met the woman of his dreams, Mary Catherine (Schneider) Biggs of Mattoon. They married on January 27, 1940 and celebrated 51 years of marriage. They were blessed with five children; Thomas (Cheryl) Biggs, Moweaqua, Patricia Biggs (deceased 5 years of age), Virginia (James) Bragg, Decatur, Marybeth (William) Garner, Decatur and James (Darlene) Biggs, Elburn. Joe served with the Navy in both WWII and the Korean War. He was aboard the Yorkville II in WWII and the Sicily in the Korean War. Besides his children he leaves 19 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren and 17 great-great grandchildren. His legacy is his wonderful family of which he said repeatedly, “I have the best kids”. He is preceded in death by his wife, his daughter, Patricia, his parents, Harriet Esther and Joseph Cumberland Biggs, a brother, Rex, a sister, Ruth, 3 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild and 1 great-great grandchild. A memorial service honoring his life will be held at noon on Saturday, August 18, at Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Home. Visitation will be 11-12 at the funeral home. Interment at Graceland Cemetery to follow.
