John Winick

John A. Winick, 85, passed away on Tuesday, August 2, 2016, at Heartland Health CareCenter. John was born September 9, 1930, in Decatur, Illinois, to Harry Winick andNellie Blanchard Winick. He married Joan Barbara Thiele on August 5, 1951. John was the loving father of three children: Joel Winick (Lynne) of Decatur; PeterWinick (Mary) of Columbus, Indiana; and Sue Weinstein (Mel) of Decatur. He wasblessed with eight grandchildren: Sarah Winick Stroud (Joey); Ben Winick (Beth);Alissa Hufford Reynolds (Brian); Chad Hufford (Keisha); Alex Winick; Sam Winick;Charlie Winick; Kristina DeLong; and twelve great-grandchildren. After graduating from Decatur High School, John attended Millikin University where hegraduated in 1952. While at Millikin he met his wife, Joan, served as president of TauKappa Epsilon Fraternity, and as president of his senior class. John was a gentleman in the truest sense and a wonderful friend to many people. Hefound great joy and pleasure in serving and helping others. As a 64-year member ofFirst Presbyterian Church of Decatur, he served as Elder, Deacon, Head Usher, andBible Study teacher. He was also a past president of the Noon Kiwanis Club. Always a hard worker, John took pride in a job well-done and always took good care ofhis family. Many people who grew up in John’s neighborhood fondly remember him asthe dad who handed out free kites from the trunk of his car. He loved his years as VicePresident of Sales at Hi Flier Kite Co. During later years he was a Sales Executive withHuston Patterson Printers, where he retired at the age of 70. John was preceded in death by his parents; brother, David Winick; grandson SamWinick; great-grandson Holden Winick; and special friend and walking companion,Hanna, his Chocolate Lab. A celebration of John’s life will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Decatur onSaturday, August 13, at 11:00 a.m. The family will receive visitors in the GatheringRoom outside the sanctuary beginning at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the familywelcomes memorial donations to First Presbyterian Church. Arrangements are beinghandled by Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Homes. The family expresses deep gratitude to the staff of the Arcadia Unit at Heartland,especially Karen and Dawn, for loving John and taking such good care of him. We give thanks for the gift of John’s life and the things in his life that were good andkind and faithful. Those will be remembered well. "
