John Thomas (JT) Hanks was born to Norma Jane (Schultz) and John Dee Hanks on September 4th, 1950. He graduated from Lakeview High School in Decatur in 1968 then graduated from Millikin University with a degree in Accounting in 1972. He then achieved his Certified Public Account License.
He began working at Archer Daniels Midland. Then he joined Grey, Smith and Piraino, which eventually became D. Piraino and Associates. He was a member of Orville Dunham, treasurer for the High Standard Club of America, founding member of the Decatur Rotary Metropolitan Club, where he often was treasurer for their annual fruit sale. He loved reading, especially news, trying new places to eat, giving gifts, big and small, and animals, especially dogs. He was truly a F.O.D., Friend of Dogs.
He is survived by his fraternal twin, Paul Michael Hanks, sister, Rebecca Sue McEvoy, niece, Amy Kathleen McEvoy, and dogs, Hattie and Moo, niece, Susan Renee Ferre’, and husband, Scott, great nephew, Joshua, and dog, Paco, his sister-in-law, Sandra Hanks, nephew, Eric Hanks, and wife, Penny, great nieces, Mikayla and Ashlyn, and great nephew, Aidan, and dog, Max, niece, Tinley Miller, and husband, Donnie, and great niece, Jesse Hanks, and dogs, Sasha and Shadow, niece, Beth Hanks, and dog, Lycan, niece, Tracie Riley, great niece, Stella Riley, and great nephew, Torben Klingbeil.
He is preceded in death by his parents, older brother, brother-in-law, and many family dogs.
Thanks to the DMH staff that cared for him over the years, especially Dr. Samuel Potts, Dr. Jeff Brustein, and Dr. Vengat Minniganti as well as DMH 4100 and DMH 5100 nurses. Thanks also goes to special family friends, Phil Jacobs, Joe Laramee, Daniel Heckel, and Judy Minton. Memorials can go to Fairview Hospital for Animals-cash for emergency funds and/or bags of Iams dogfood for “Fill up the Waiting Room” from Nov. 18th – Dec. 18th which provides dog food for families in need through Catholic Charities.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Decatur Club in the Mezzanine on Monday, Nov. 18th, from 5pm-7pm. He will be sorely missed. "
