Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 P.M. on Friday, February 19, at Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Home, Decatur, IL. Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M., Saturday, February 20, at the funeral home. Following funeral services, burial will be in Graceland Cemetery, Decatur, IL with military rites conducted by the Macon County Honor Guard.John grew up in Robinson, Illinois, and attended Lake Forest Academy in Chicago. Following high school, he enlisted in the Navy at Great Lakes. He was a World War II veteran. John graduated from Hanover College, Indiana with a BS in English. He received his MA from Butler University, Indiana. In 1946, at Hanover College Alex met Eubie Martin, the love of his life. It was love at first sight. What a wonderful journey they traveled.Alex coached and taught at Mishawaka, East Peoria and Eisenhower. He also coached at Cerro Gordo, Millikin, Warrensburg-Latham, and Illiopolis. Alex loved teaching but football was his true passion. The boys of the many teams he coached were very important to him. He coached over 50 years.John leaves two daughters, Carol Cohen and Barbara Alexander; a grandson Alexander Steinhaus; David Cohen; Steve Reiss and Petey, his dog.
