James "Jim" Phillip Powers, 90, of Cerro Gordo, IL, passed away 5:10 a.m., Tuesday, January 27, 2015, at his residence. Funeral services will be 11:30 a.m., Friday, January 30, 2015, at LaPlace Church of the Brethren in LaPlace, Illinois, with visitation one hour prior to service time at the church. Burial will be in LaPlace Cemetery, LaPlace, IL, with military rites conducted by the Cerro Gordo American Legion. Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Home, Cerro Gordo, is handling the arrangements. Memorials may be made to LaPlace Church of the Brethren. James was born May 24, 1924 in Sidell, IL, the son of Peter Avery and Ellen Ferne (Warrick) Powers. He married Ruth "Genny" Genevieve Metzger on May 30, 1947 in Petersburg, IL. James was a member of LaPlace Church of the Brethren and a Sunday School teacher. He was Cerro Gordo Township Clerk and served on the Library Board. James retired as Vice President at Horizon Credit Union. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, serving in WWII. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Genny of Cerro Gordo, IL; son Phillip Gene Powers of Marissa, IL; daughter Phyllis M. (Jim) Rutherford of Oakley, IL; grandchildren Alexander James (Taylor) Powers and Jennifer Kraft; great grandchild Catie Kraft; and sister Ruth (Lynn) Abbott of Normal, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents, and granddaughter Erin Powers. The family would like to give special thanks to Carolyn Sanders, Kim Robertson, Dr. Shackelford, and St. John's Hospice nurses for their loving care and compassion given to Jim during his journey. "
