Hubert Crum

Hubert "Red" Crum, 84, of St. Joseph, IL, passed away at 1:55 p.m. Sunday, March 25, 2012 at Provena Covenent Hospital, Champaign, IL. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, March 30, at Brintlinger & Earl Funeral Home, Decatur, with visitation 5-8 p.m. Thursday, March 29, at the funeral home. Burial will be at Hall Cemetery, Blue Mound, IL, with military rites conducted by the Macon County Honor Guard. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the Heart Fund. Hubert was born December 31, 1927, in Mt. Zion, IL, the son of Ralph E. and Eugenia (Rutherford) Crum. He married Betty J. Minott on January 21, 1950, in Decatur. She preceded him in death on March 15, 1996. He later married Ada (Mathes) McGuire on September 20, 1997, in Decatur. Hubert was a member of Hillside Bethel Tabernacle Church. He enlisted in the Marines at age 16, and spent 13 years rising to rank of Staff Sgt, serving in WWII and Korea. He retired after 37 years from A.E. Staley Co. and was a shop steward and co-chairman of A.E. Staleys fund raising efforts for the United Way for many years. Hubert was a volunteer worker for American Red Cross for 45 years, donating more than 56 gallons of blood, and was Volunteer of the Year for blood donor and workers in 1996. He was co-chairman of Green Thumb Project, team leader for Red Cross Disaster Services, lifetime member of Marines Corp Association, Marines Corp League, China Marine Association, and the V.F.W. He was a member of Military Order of Devil Dogs, American Legion, VietNow, and Loyal Order of Moose 729. Surviving are his wife: Ada of St Joseph, IL; son: Richard (Kathleen) Crum of Decatur, IL; daughters: Brenda (Raymond) Baker of Forsyth, IL and Glenda McMinn of Corpus Christi, TX; sister: Mrs. Jenese Brewner of Decatur, IL; brother: Kenneth (Shirley) Crum of Champaign, IL; 4 grandchildren: Richard Crum, Christie Baker, Raymond "Tiger" (Cassandra) Baker, and Tracy McMinn; 1 step grandson: Nick Waddell; 1 step-grand-daughter: , Keli Waddell,: 6 great-grandchildren: Josh Gates, Alexis Gates, Kortney Gates, Trevor Gates, Cassie Baker, Samantha Baker; and 4 step great-grandchildren: Casey Boes-Waddell, McKenzie Boes-Waddell, Bryson Boes, Amaya Boes. Step children: Tim (Debbie) McGuire, Tom (Jan) McGuire, Micki (Lowell) Suits; 8 step grandchildren Greg, Brian (Stacy), Jon and Andrew McGuire, Jennie (Dave) Burke, Ben McGuire, Tammy (Jasen) Ingram, and David (Melissa) Suits; and 8 step great-grandchildren: Alyssa, Emily, Zachary, Nicholas, Evan, Kailyn, Lucas and Avery.. He also leaves his great companion cat, Crook. Red was preceded in death by 1 brother, 3 sisters, and one stepson: Rick McGuire. "
