Harriett Mings

June 1, 1921 — November 2, 2011

Harriett M. Mings, 90, of Oreana passed away at 8:40 P.M. November 2,2011 in Decatur Memorial Hospital and into the arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ with family and devoted caregivers by her side. Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Monday, November 7, 2011 at Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Home, Decatur, IL. There will be no visitation. Burial at Illini Cemetery, Warrensburg, with military rites. Harriett was born June 1, 1921 in Joliet, IL the daughter of Darius and Harriett (Reed) Maltby. She married William W. Mings in San Diego, CA on October 27, 1943. Harriett was an accomplished pianist, having studied at the Joliet Musical College at age 5 Yz years of age. After graduating from Plainfield, IL High School and Business College, she joined the Women's Army Corps (WAC.) where she attained the rank of Sergeant. While stationed in San Diego she met and married her husband of 62 years, Sgt. William (Bill) Mings. Harriett enjoyed genealogy and did extensive research on her and her husband's families going back many generations. Harriett loved the Lord and loved and enjoyed her family. Harriett is lovingly remembered by family as "Mom, Grammy, and Grandma" and by her caregivers as "Missy, Toots and Ms Harriett". She referred to her children and grandchildren as "sweet girl" and "sweet boy" and to her caregivers of 4 years "her girls". Harriett's wise counsel frequently included "Trust the Lord, talk to Him, He knows what you need" and one of her favorite bible verses was Proverbs 3:5-6, "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths." Harriett is survived by her daughter, Karen Warnick (Ray Swank) of Mt. Zion, IL and her son Dr. William (Sharra) Mings of Pottsboro, TX. She leaves seven grandchildren: Brenda Schwass of Decatur, IL; Robin (Mike) Birge of Mt. Zion, IL; Bob (Natalie) Warnick of Marysville, KS; Rick (Irene) Warnick of Chesapeake, VA; Josh (Maggie) Mings of Flower Mound, TX; Jake Mings of Tulsa, OK; Eric (Jessica) Mings of Lewisville, TX. She leaves 15 great-grandchildren: Matthew Schwass (Kelly Malloy) of Decatur, IL; Kevin (Jamie) Schwass of Decatur, IL; Tara (Matt) Daniels of Mt. Zion, IL; Alex Birge of Peoria, IL; Paige Birge of 'Charleston, IL; Caitlin Warnick, Keely Warnick, Hunter Warnick, Brayden Warnick of Marysville, KS; Brad Warnick, Ashley Warnick of Chesapeake, VA; Sebastian Mings, Isabella Mings, Eli Mings of Flower Mound, TX; Azariah Mings of Lewisville, TX. She also leaves two great-great-grandchildren; Austin Schwass of Decatur, IL, Madyx Schwass of Decatur, IL. She was preceded in death by her husband, infant daughter, parents, 2 sisters and son-in-law Bob Warnick. We would like to thank Harriett's devoted and caring companions/caregivers Sue, Sharon, Deanna, Alberta, Alicia and Vicki, and devoted helpers Gerald and Karen Like, that have been with her over the last 4 years enabling her to stay in her home. We would also like to thank DMH 5th Floor Nursing Staff, Dr. Kohli, DMH Hospice, and Fair Havens Nursing Home for all their care and support over the last several months during a very difficult time.
