Harriet Miller McGuire, 93, of Decatur, died July 19, 2016 after a brief illness. Harriet was born in Latham, Illinois to Merle and Grace (Waddell) Miller on March 17, 1923. She graduated as valedictorian from Warrensburg High School in 1940. In 1943, she married Charles McGuire, a marriage that continued for nearly 73 years.Harriet and Charles’s farm was destroyed in a sudden tornado in June 1951. After recovering, Harriet and Charles rebuilt their farm west of Warrensburg, where they would spend the next 60 years.Harriet was a homemaker, raising three children, taught Sunday school at Illini Congregational Church, led Macon County 4-H clubs, and served on the Barclay Library Board. She loved sewing and reading, and on the farm, she maintained a thriving garden.In her later years Harriet became an avid golfer, winning the city nine-hole championship in 1983, at age 60. She played frequently in leagues at Sun n Fun, Hickory Point, and other city courses. She and Charles were mainstays at Warrensburg-Latham and Millikin University basketball games. They also spent several weeks each year traveling to visit their far-flung children and grandchildren in Colorado, Florida, and Texas, journeys they would make year in and year out well into their 80s. In 2011 Harriet and Charles left their farm and moved to Decatur. During this time, she was fortunate to live close to her sister, Esther, and she kept up with family and friends over email and Facebook.Harriet is survived by her husband, Charles; their children, Ann Edgecombe (John) of Jacksonville, Florida, and Richard McGuire of Union Pier, Michigan; her grandchildren, Jason Edgecombe (Kathryn), Adam Edgecombe (Laura), Bly McGuire (Jimmie Sue), and Lyndsey Denton (Ryan); great-grandchildren James, Miller, and Madelyn Edgecombe and Holden Edgecombe; extended family including Tom and Cathy Howell, Roger and Karen Edgecombe, Sandra Brooks, Gloria Colebar, and Melanie McGuire and numerous friends from Illini Church. She joins her eldest son, Charles Thomas McGuire, grandson Thomas Allen McGuire, and sister Esther Burns Carson who preceded her in death.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Allen McGuire Memorial Scholarship Fund and Illini Church. Visitation will be held on Friday, July 22, 2016 at Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Home, Decatur, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 23, 2016 at Illini Church, Warrensburg, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Illini Cemetery, Warrensburg. Pallbearers will be her grandsons and nephews Jerry Burns, Steve Braden, and Ron Braden. "
