Harold Stein, 98, of Decatur, passed away peacefully listening to “New York, New York” by Frank Sinatra on March 12, 2024, surrounded by his family.
Visitation will be 3:00-5:00 PM, Sunday, March 17, 2024 at Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Home, Decatur. Burial will be at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA.
Harold was born March 17, 1925 in New York, NY, the son of Louis Stein and Mary Schimmelman. He married Beverly Ann Riemann on July 9, 1955 in New York. Harold earned a BA from Kansas State University, graduating in 1964 and later earned his Executive MBA from the University of Illinois graduating at the top of his class in 1979.
Harold proudly served our country in the US Army during WWII, Korea and Vietnam. He was a POW in Stalag 3-G during WWII and earned both a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He earned the rank of Lieutenant Colonel retiring after 33 years of service to our country. Following his retirement from the Army, Harold began a second career at Kemper Insurance where he worked for 15 years. Harold thoroughly enjoyed time spent with his family and was a stamp collector. He loved traveling, especially to the beach and enjoyed memorable trips to Russia and Morrocco. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion and Retired Officers Association. Harold also volunteered with Special Olympics.
Surviving are his wife of 68 years, Beverly Stein; children: Paul (Julie) Stein of Flagstaff, AZ, Monica (Steve) Olson of Mendocino, CA, David Stein of Arlington Heights, IL, and Linda Stein of Phoenix, AZ; grandchildren: Alexis, Hans, Hunter Tatiana, and Ayla; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents and siblings: Jack, Rita, Arnold, Myra, Paula, and Benjamin.
