Funeral services will be 12:00 noon, Saturday, December 23, 2023, at Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Home, Decatur, with visitation one hour prior to service time at the funeral home. Burial will be in Boiling Springs Cemetery, Decatur, IL, with military rites conducted by the U.S. Navy and Macon County Honor Guard.
Harold was born February 6, 1929, near Bethany, IL, the only child of Harry Ralph Marlowe and Zella Mae (Farris) Marlowe. He attended Decatur Public School and joined the military at age 17, and served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Brush, with multiple tours around the world. While in the service, he married Norma Jean Jones on April 30, 1947 in Decatur, IL and they enjoyed 76 happy years together.
After his military discharge from the U.S. Navy, Harold and Norma traveled west to Santa Fe, New Mexico where Harold learned the electrical trade and worked as an electrician for family, and daughters Nancy Lynn Marlowe Moore and Jerri Lea Marlowe were born. The family returned to Decatur, IL in 1960 where he lived for the rest of his life. Harold worked all over the country as an electrician with Modern Electric in Champaign/Urbana, IL for 28 years. Usually the tallest man in the room, Harold was known for his electrical skills, strong work ethic, love of reading, hiking and golf. He was quick with a smile and his kind, playful personality made him a favorite companion of many.
Harold and Norma Jean enjoyed a long retirement together in Queen Valley, AZ, golfing, hiking, rock hunting, and taking off road jeep trips. He was active in the Okaw Valley Gun Club and enjoyed playing golf with the Big Dummies golf group. Harold was a great man and lived a remarkable life. We’ll remember him every time we see a western film, or eat an Oreo dipped in milk.
Harold is survived by his wife Norma Jean; daughter, Jerri Lea Marlowe of Berryville, AR; 5 grandchildren: Ronda Moore Aspengren of Anchorage, AK, Natalie Moore Durbin of Shiloh, IL, Ashley Dooty Stouten of Eureka Springs, AR, Orin Moore of Pocahontas, IL, and Neeley Dooty of Berryville, AR; 11 adoring great-grandchildren: Ciera, Nathan, Olin, Zella, Bella, Brodey, Nolan, Hawkins, Kaylie, Braydon and Marley.
