Glen Eugene Gene Bunning, 59, of Decatur, died Saturday (08-22-2009), at Decatur Memorial Hospital, with his family by his side.Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Wednesday (08-26-2009) in Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M., Tuesday (08-25-2009) at Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Home. Burial will be in Marrowbone Township Cemetery, Bethany, IL. Memorials may be made to: Harristown Fire Department.Gene was born on July 19, 1950 in Decatur, IL., the son of Glen H. and Edith (Hooper) Bunning. He attended school at Niantic - Harristown, where he graduated in 1968. He married June Ellen Knierim on May 9, 1970. To that blessed union were born Donald Eugene and Jennifer Eileen.Gene worked several jobs including a grinder at Mueller Co., Essex wire, a truck driver for Shobe and Austin Trucking, Plant Protection at Firestone Co., before he founded Midwest Fire Equipment in 1983, which he owned and operated until 2006.He actively served on the Harristown Fire Department from 1971-1990 working his way up to Assistant Chief, then retired and was elected President of the Board of Trustees until 2005. He was re-elected three times. Also, he was President of Central Illinois Girls Softball in 1996. He spent a lot of time calling bingo games to support the Scorpions, his daughters softball team. Genes latest business venture was the Big Money Bingo Hall in Normal, IL., founded in April of 2006.Surviving are his wife June of Decatur, IL.; son Donald Bunning and fianc Ruth Garrison and her daughter Morgan of Decatur, IL.; daughter Jennifer Sharp and husband Lee and their sons Brett and Brian all of Decatur, IL.; mother: Edith of Decatur, IL.; sister Linda Boyer and husband Bill of Decatur, IL. and their son James Boyer; brother Jerry Bunning and wife Regina of Taylorville, IL. and son Nicholas Bunning of St. Louis, MO.; mother-in-law: Hazel Kepler and husband Jr. of Decatur; brother-in-law: Robert Knierim and wife Joni, their daughters Alyssa and Ashley of Decatur, IL. and their son Anthony Knierim and wife Nicole of Jefferson City, MO. He was preceded in death by his father. Genes family wish to express their heartfelt thanks to Dr.Estrada-Garcia, Dr. Velasco, Dr. Reyes, Dr. Rademacher, the girls at Cancer Care Specialists (especially Betty), and the nursing staff at Decatur Memorial Hospital 5100 unit for caring for Gene during his illness.
