Beloved Gladys V. Schahrer, 95, died at 6:50 AM Monday, June 3, 2013, at Imboden Creek Living Center, Decatur, IL. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 Tuesday, June 11, 2013, at Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Home, with visitation from 10:00 AM Tuesday until service time at the funeral home. Burial will be in Macon County Memorial Park Cemetery, Harristown, IL Gladys was born in Decatur, IL, on October 30, 1917, a daughter of Edward J. and Mabel G. Kellogg Spitzer. She attended Pugh Elementary School, then Garfield Elementary School, then Roosevelt Junior High School, and finally Decatur High School. Growing up in the midst of the Great Depression, Gladys left school and went to work as a teenager in the mid-1930's doing various types of work. She got her job at A.E. Staley Manufacturing Co. in 1939, and stayed on there for 43 more years. She lived with her family in various residences in Decatur until 1963. She met Paul Schahrer while working at A.E. Staley Co. She dated him for some time until they were married. Paul had begun personally building a home in 1961, and the residence was ready to be lived in when they were married, on August 3, 1963. He died February 17, 1972. Gladys was a long-term member of Trueblood Memorial Evangelical United Brethren Church (later Trueblood United Methodist Church). She was active and involved in the church in many ways. Following the closure of Trueblood in 2002, Gladys transferred to Christ United Methodist Church, attending there as her health would permit over the next 10 years. She is survived by nephews: Kenneth D. (Nancy) Spitzer, of Pullman, WA; Robert E. (Jean) Spitzer, of Glen Ellyn, IL; one sister-in-law: Beverly J. Spitzer, of Decatur, IL; cousins: Marvin G. Spitzer, and Arlene N. Carroll of Decatur, IL; one great-aunt: Velma M. Zigler, of Broadway, VA; and family of her late husband, Paul Schahrer in Assumption IL. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Paul Schahrer, one brother: Glenn E. Spitzer; and one sister: Naomi F. Spitzer. Memorials: Christ United Methodist Church. "
