Gilbert “Gib” L. Maines, 90, of Decatur, passed away on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, at Hickory Point Christian Village.
In accordance with his wishes, cremation rites will be observed, and private family services will be held at a later date.
Gib was born on March 31, 1935, to Arthur Lee and Mary “Birdella” Gilbert. He married Shirley Amon in 1954, and they shared 23 years together with their 4 children until her passing on September 3, 1977. In 1978, he married Carol Voorhees, who preceded him in death in 1992. Later, Gib married Virginia “Gini” Casey-Maines on April 9, 1993, and they enjoyed 27 years together before her passing on November 2, 2020.
Gib dedicated 36 years of his career to Caterpillar, working as a supply data processor until his retirement on January 1, 1991.
He is survived by his four children: Rexlyn (Jay) Nicole of Decatur; Mary Frances “Murphy” (Rodney) Vorndam of Texas; James Thomas (Sue) Maines of Georgia; and Heather (David) Raver of Iowa.
Gib was preceded in death by his parent’s, three wives’ and one grandson.
He is lovingly remembered by twelve grandchildren, forty great‑grandchildren, and one great‑great‑grandchild—marking an extraordinary legacy of five living generations that occurred five different times throughout his life with various family members, spanning from his being the youngest to the oldest in each group.
Gib also cherished the many stepchildren and step‑grandchildren who became part of his life—Laurie, Susie, John, Loren, and their families—each holding a special place in his heart.
He found joy in sailing, camping, and traveling wherever the road or water would take him, gifting his children and grandchildren countless memories and endless adventures.
Gib adored Christmas decorations and train collections he maintained with enthusiasm and pride.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Ron and Jeanne Helm for the thoughtful letters they sent him nearly every week for several years.
Deep appreciation is also given to the dedicated caregivers at Hickory Point Christian Village who provided him with attentive and loving care during his time there.
Gib treasured the lasting friendships he shared with his Roach Grade School classmates—Patty Davis, Eileen Marshall, Bill and June Moutray, and Bob Walters—bonds that wonderfully endured for more than 85 years.
If we have unintentionally missed anyone, please accept our sincere apologies. We are grateful for all who touched his life and brought joy not only to him but to our entire family.
Thank you,
The Gilbert Lee “Gib” Maines Family
