Gertrude Briggs

Gertrude A. Briggs, 94, of Decatur, IL. died Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at St. Mary's Hospital, Decatur, IL. Funeral Mass will be at St. James Catholic Church in Decatur on Saturday, November 12, at 12:00 p.m. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the funeral Mass at St. James. Burial will be at North Fork Cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be made to St. James Catholic Church. Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Home are handling the arrangements. Gertrude was born February 26, 1917, in Beech Grove, IN, the daughter of George and Viola (Frazier) Callahan. She married Ray S. Briggs on September 7, 1940 in Ft. Madison, IA. He preceded her in death. Gertrude was a member of St. James Catholic Church, St Elizabeth Society, and St. Mary's Auxiliary. She is survived by her children Stephen Briggs and wife Mary of Decatur, IL, Donald and wife Susan of Springfield, VA; grandsons Brian Briggs (Wendy) of King George County, VA, Michael Briggs of Brooklyn, NY, Raymond Briggs (Stephanie) of Alexandria, VA, Todd Briggs (Daphne) of Chicago, IL, Curtis Briggs of Chicago, IL; sister Margaret Crawford of St. Louis, Mo, and five great grandsons. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ray, four sisters and two brothers. Special thanks to the staff at Eagle Ridge Assisted Living Center and to all of her friends and neighbors. Thanks also to the staff at Extended Care at St. Mary's Hospital for the loving care she received in her final hours. Mom always had a smile on her face for her friends and the people she loved.
