Genevieve Howell “Gen” Whitney, 91, of Decatur passed away August 17, 2018 in her home with her family by her side. A Celebration of Life reception will be held from 5:00 - 7:00 PM, Tuesday, August 21 at the Country Club of Decatur. Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Homes, Decatur is assisting the family with arrangements. A Graveside Service will be held at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, August 22 at Fairlawn Cemetery.. Memorials in Gen’s honor may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church or Macon County Animal Shelter Foundation, PO Box 633, Decatur, IL 62525. Mrs. Whitney was born November, 21, 1926 in Toledo, OH, the daughter of Alva L. and Lona E. (Shambarger) Howell. At the age of 8, she moved to Decatur with her family. She graduated from Decatur High School in the class of 1944 and later attended Brown’s Business College. She married Glen “Jerry” Whitney on May 8, 1954 and he preceded her in death on July 18, 1998. She worked for Standard Oil Company and later became a Bridal Consultant at Van Law Carol’s. Mrs. Whitney was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church where she served as a deacon. She was past president of Easter Seals Association, served on the board of the Symphony Orchestra Guild of Decatur, was a member of PEO, Chapter GR. She was also a patroness of Junior Welfare Association and a member of the Decatur Club and Country Club of Decatur. Gen had a great sense of humor and liked shopping and bridge club. She never met a stranger and was deeply loved by many. She is survived by her son, Clayton and his wife, Jill of Decatur; two grandchildren Jerald “Jerry” and Julia, all of whom she adored, as well as her devoted friend and caregiver, Gloria Benson. Mrs. Whitney was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Glen “Jerry” Whitney and special friend, Richard K. Reising.
