Elmer Barr

Elmer Max Barr, 82, of Decatur, IL, passed away at 12:07 a.m. Saturday, June 21, 2014 at Hickory Point Christian Village, Forsyth, IL. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, June 26 at First Church of the Nazarene with visitation 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, June 25, at the church. Burial will be in Mt. Gilead Cemetery, Decatur, with military rites conducted by the Macon County Honor Guard. Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Homes, Decatur, are assisting the family with the arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Hickory Point Christian Village. Elmer was born November 6, 1931, in Decatur, the son of Karl and Augusta (Zeronski) Barr. He married Clara Luka on October 30, 1955, in Decatur. Elmer served his country with the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of First Church of the Nazarene where he was very active. Elmer worked as a purchaser/buyer for Caterpillar Inc., retiring after 30 years of service, and was a member of Decatur Caterpillar Retirees Club. He later worked as a golf ranger for Red Tail and Scovill golf courses. Elmer enjoyed gardening of all types and was a St. Louis Cardinals fan. As a devoted family man, he avidly followed all of his grandchildren's sports and activities. Surviving are his wife Clara of Decatur; son Don (Susan) Barr of Falmouth, ME; daughters Carol (Gordon) Karker of Peachtree, GA, and Jan (Bob) Dowell of Homewood, IL; grandchildren Brandon (Nicki) Barr, Bradley (Lisa) Barr, Kristin (Josh) Stevens, Bryant (Brittany) Barr, Geoffrey Karker, Megan Dowell, and Ryan Dowell; 3 great-grandchildren; sister Emma Mueller of Rockford, IL; and brother Robert (Jewell) Barr of Long Creek, IL. Elmer was preceded in death by his parents, nine brothers and one sister. "
