Edwin Mellon

Edwin Dale Mellon, 88, of Decatur, IL, passed away on Friday, March 8, 2013, at Decatur Memorial Hospital. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 13, at St. Patrick Catholic Church. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, at Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Home, Decatur, with a prayer service at 5:30 p.m. Burial will be in Camp Butler National Cemetery, Riverton, IL. Memorials may be made to St. Patrick Catholic Church, Macon County Historical Society, or Alzheimer's Foundation through the S.I.U. School of Medicine. Edwin was born November 6, 1924, in Barry, IL, the son of James E. and Estella M. (Rigg) Mellon. He married Mary Kathryn Merna on July 20, 1957. She preceded him in death. Edwin was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, Macon County Historical Society, University of Illinois Alumni Association, Illinois Education Association, and a life member of N.E.A, Phi Delta Kappa, Illinois Retired Teachers Association and Decatur Area Retired Teachers Association. He was a WWII veteran, retiring after more than 20 years in the Army Reserves. Edwin graduated from U of I with a Bachelors Degree, Masters and Advanced Degree. He was a teacher for 33 years with Decatur Public School District #61, the last 20 years as principal at Oglesby, Roach, and Spencer schools, and continued his involvement in education by endowing the Mary Kathryn Merna-Mellon Scholarship and the Edwin Mellon Scholarship at Illinois State University. Surviving are his children: Kathryn A. Mellon-Kusibab and husband Gregory of Wake Forest, NC, James E. Mellon and wife Carol of Durham, NC, David Mellon of Hawthorne, FL, John Mellon and wife Julie of Taylorville, IL, and Stephen Mellon and wife Jodi of Decatur, IL; grandchildren: Matthew, Christopher, Elizabeth, Mary, and Sarah Mellon; Kristie Kusibab; Alisha Brown, Kyle, Jade, and Tierra Mellon; Aidan, Evan and Colin Mellon; and 5 great-grandchildren. "
