Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. Saturday, January 24, 2009 at St. Peter A.M.E. Church, Decatur, with the Pastor, Carey A. Grady officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, January 23, 2009 at Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Home, Decatur. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dorothy Jean Reid Memorial Fund at Soy Capital Bank 455 North Main Decatur, Illinois.Dorothy was born May 31, 1946, in Montgomery, Alabama. However, she was lovingly raised by her parents, Samuel Moore and Jewelry Moore in Waycross, Georgia. She received her Bachelors Degree from Tennessee State University and a Masters Degree from the University of Illinois in Springfield. She married Leonard W. Reid on January 9th, 1986. She was the mother of her pride and joys, daughter, Rasha Kamil Portis, and son, Jathan Rashad Portis.Mrs. Reid was an educator for Decatur Public schools for 40 years and the principal of Parsons Accelerated Elementary schools for the past 7 of those 40 years. During her term as an educator, she has served as a teacher, dean, and a principal, officially. Unofficially, she was a mentor, a friend, a counselor, and motherly figure to many. Dorothy was a devoted member of St. Peter A.M.E. church. She loved her church and her church family. She was member in the church choir and a soloist. Dorothy was a Silver Star member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. She was initiated in Nu Omicron Omega chapter (Springfield) of Alpha Kappa Alpha. She was a charter member and first president of the Chi Xi Omega chapter (Decatur) of Alpha Kappa Alpha.Dorothy Reid was a notable figure in her community. She was often called upon to do motivational speeches. She sang with the Decatur Chorale and traveled with them on a European Tour. She served as a mentor and consultant for various educational, mentoring and tutoring programs. She was an inspiration to many and for that she has been honored by NAACP with the President Award, Decatur Public Schools 2006-2007 Administrator of the Year Award, Women of Excellence awarded her the Cora Bell Ryman Education Award, and her beloved Chi Xi Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha presented her with Leadership and Service award for her years she served as president. She leaves to cherish her memories: Husband, Leonard W. Reid, of Decatur, daughter, Rasha Kamil Portis of Decatur, Illinois, son, Jathan Rashad Portis (fiance, Kristin) of Decatur, Illinois, brother, Samuel (Sheree) Moore Jr. of Waycross, Georgia, sisters, Shirley Myrick, of Waycross Georgia, Veronica Johnson of Jacksonville, Florida, Azulene (Michael) Moore and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents, Samuel Moore and Jewelry Moore and her beloved aunts Ann Johnson, Arbelia Harrington, and Pearl Grace.
