Dorothy Miller

On Wednesday, September 18, 2013 the life journey of Dorothy Elizabeth Fittro Miller, 92, ended peacefully with her loving family by her side at Imboden Creek Living Center, Decatur, IL. A service to celebrate Dorothy's life will be at 6:00pm on Sunday, September 22 at the Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Home in Decatur. Friends may call beginning at 4:30pm until service time. Burial will at 11:00am on Monday, September 23, 2013 in Woodlawn Cemetery in Clinton, IL. Dorothy was born in rural DeWitt County on January 27, 1921 to Dora Bunyard Fittro and Charles Harvard Fittro. She moved with her mother and father to Bloomington at age four and at age twelve moved to Chicago due to father's work as a car man for Chicago & Alton Railroad. She was the only one of her sisters and brothers that graduated from high school in 1939 for Thomas Kelly High School in Chicago, IL. She worked for her sister, Nora Fittro Covey in Clinton, IL helping her maintain her household of five children until she started work as a telephone operator and then in the telephone office after her graduation. During the summer in Clinton she met her future husband, Earl Lee Miller, who graduated from high school in 1937. They were married on March 16, 1940 in Clinton, IL at the Methodist parsonage. Her sister Irene Fittro Reeder and her husband George Reeder were witnesses. They made their home in Clinton and two daughters were born into this union. During World War II while her husband was in the service, Dorothy worked at Woolworth's in Clinton. Dorothy was an active member of the Webster School PTA in Clinton, IL serving as President. Her family moved to Decatur in 1952 due to Earl's transfer to Illinois Central Railroad where they remained. Dorothy worked for Sears & Roebuck in the credit department. Dorothy also worked for St. Mary's Hospital in the Business Office for 17 years and retired in 1980. She loved to travel and plan trips and was fortunate to see a lot of our country. She loved flowers and took great pride in her home. She was a wonderful wife and mother and had great wisdom, but most of all she loved her relatives and friends. She often remarked how she could never have lived alone in her home if it had not been for a few very close ones. She loved everyone and cherished folks coming to see her and calling her. Dorothy was a member of the South Shores United Methodist Church which is now in with Grace United Methodist Church. Left behind to cherish her memory are her daughters, Sandra Sue Miller Smith and husband Charles of Decatur and Carol Ann Miller Wydick and husband Dan of Warrensburg; grandsons Marc William Smith of Carlyle, IL, Daron Lee Smith and partner, Chris of St. Louis, MO; granddaughters Michelle Marie Wydick Huggins and husband Brian of Forsyth, IL, Angela Sue Wydick Ross and husband Scott of Louisville, KY, Jennifer Ann Wydick Tennyson of Warrensburg, IL; nine great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Earl Lee Miller, her parents; sister Nora Covey, Irene Reeder; brothers, Wendel Fittro, Wayne Fittro and baby Fittro. Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army; St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital; and the Shriner's Hospital for Children. We would like to thank the Imboden Center Staff as well as Dr. D. Patel and Dr. G. Patel and their staff for the loving attention to our mother's end of life care. They did the very best they could keeping her as comfortable as possible. "
