Visitation: 5:00 PM on August 02, 2011 Funeral: 10:00 AM on August 04, 2011 Donald G. O'Brien, 79, of Decatur, IL, went to be with the Lord, Sunday, July 31, 2011, surrounded by his family. Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, August 3, 2011, at Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Home, Decatur, IL, with visitation 5 to 8 P.M., Tuesday, August 2, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Macon County Memorial Park, Harristown, IL with full military rites. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Decatur, 1320 Arbor Drive, Decatur, IL 62526. Don was born February 2, 1932, in Hull, Illinois, the son of Russell M. and Mabel Smith O'Brien. He married Shirley Giberson on January 21, 1951 in Decatur and they recently celebrated their 60th anniversary. He graduated from Decatur High School in 1950. Don retired from Carpenters Local 742 and was a former superintendent for L.E. DeVore Company in commercial construction. He was a member and past commander of the Decatur Power Squadron (USPS); boating safety instructor for the Decatur Power Squadron and also the Illinois Department of Natural Resources; member of First Baptist Church of Decatur and served on the Building Relocation Committee; the Noon Lions Club; an Assistant Scout Master for Boy Scout Troop 7 at Dennis School; starter/ranger at Scovill Golf Course for 10 years. He played golf and was especially proud of the hole-in-one he made on the 9th hole at Faries Park Golf Course in 1998. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, having served in Korea. He is survived by his wife, Shirley of Decatur, son: David M. (Erica) O'Brien, of Moweaqua; grandchildren: Aaron (Jessica) Augustine, Ronald Augustine, Kirstin O'Brien, and Gabe O'Brien; great-grandchildren: Zaydin Augustine, Kellan Augustine, and Keelan Rice. He is also survived by a sister: B.Darlene Perry, of Decatur. He was preceded in death by his parents, stepmother, and half brother. Don overcame diversity these past ten years, but now God needed him. The family would like to thank Dr. B. Esparaz, DMH Hospice, and Don's caregivers for the excellent care he received. "
