Donald Metzger

Donald H. Metzger, 90, of Macon, IL, passed away at 1:02 A.M. Monday, June 9, 2014, in St. Mary's Hospital. Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Thursday, June 12, at Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Home, with visitation two hours before the service. Burial will be in the South Macon Township Cemetery, Macon, IL. Memorials may be made to Cancer Care Specialists of Central Illinois, Macon United Methodist Church, or Destiny Fellowship. Don was born July 17, 1923, in LaPlace, Illinois, the son of Ralph and Sarah Hissong Metzger. He married Elaine Born on December 25, 1943, in Cerro Gordo, Illinois. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on Christmas Day, 2013. Don was a lifetime farmer in the Cerro Gordo and Macon area. He served as State FFA Secretary-Treasurer in 1941, received his State Farmer Degree in Chicago in 1943, and the American Farmer Degree in Kansas City in 1944. He loved everything about farming. Don was a 65-year member of Mt. Zion Odd Fellows Lodge, a 65-year member of the Cerro Gordo Masonic Lodge, and a member of the Macon United Methodist Church. He served two terms on the Macon School Board. Don enjoyed being around people and playing cards with his friends in Macon. He also enjoyed and loved being with his family. Don is survived by his wife, Elaine, of Macon; Son, Roger (Janice) Metzger of Macon; Daughters, Audry (Jim) Redpath of Morton; Jane (Dennis) Nelson of Chicago; Janice (Gary) Berry of Macon; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sisters, Genevieve Powers of Cerro Gordo and Jean Munson of LaPlace. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters. Don's family would like to give special thanks to the Cancer Care Specialists of Central Illinois for all their care and compassion during his illness, especially nurse, Karen, and Dr. Perry Guaglianone. Also, a special thanks to all the staff at St. Mary's Hospital and to Dr. David Baumberger. "
