Dennis M. Hartwig

September 1, 1949 — June 3, 2026

Niantic

Dennis Moore Hartwig, 76, of Niantic, Illinois, passed away peacefully on June 3, 2026, in Springfield, Illinois, surrounded by the love of his family and friends.

Born on September 1, 1949, in Decatur, Illinois, Dennis was the son of Howard and Mildred (Moore) Hartwig, who preceded him in death. A 1969 graduate of Niantic-Harristown High School, Dennis lived a life defined by faith, hard work, humility, and service to others.

At just 19 years old, Dennis assumed responsibility for managing the family farm north of Niantic following the loss of his father. For more than two decades, he devoted himself to the land, carrying on the farming tradition with determination and pride. In the late 1980s, he began a second career as a custodian at Harristown Elementary School, where he faithfully served until his retirement. Even after leaving full-time farming, Dennis never lost his connection to agriculture and continued lending a hand whenever needed at both Miller Farms and Moore Farms in rural Niantic.

A devoted servant of the Lord, Dennis was a lifelong member and elder of the Niantic United Methodist Church. His faith was evident not only in his words but in his actions. He took special pride in welcoming everyone who walked through the church doors, often greeting them with a warm smile, a friendly conversation, and of course, a hot cup of coffee.

Dennis was devoted to his community and found great joy in sports throughout his life. He served for over 30 years as a volunteer firefighter and worked the clock for hundreds of high school and junior high basketball games.

In his younger years, he was an avid bowler, spending decades participating in leagues at Eldorado Bowl in Decatur. He was a passionate supporter of the University of Illinois Fighting Illini, the St. Louis Cardinals, and the St. Louis Blues. Closer to home, he was one of the most loyal fans of the Sangamon Valley Storm and previously the Niantic-Harristown Indians.

While Dennis could be found at countless school events over the years, his greatest passion was track and field. He spent innumerable hours traveling across Illinois to cheer on the Sangamon Valley Storm track teams. Rarely seen without a stopwatch around his neck and a clipboard in his hand, Dennis became a familiar and beloved figure at meets throughout the state. He was always eager to lend a helping hand to Coach C., encourage athletes, and celebrate their accomplishments. To many young competitors, he was far more than a fan-he was a mentor, supporter, and friend.

Dennis is survived by his brother. Douglas (Debbie) Hartwig of Decatur, Illinois; his
nephews Chris {Mandy} Hartwig of Peoria, Illinois, Chad (Heather) Hartwig of Seneca, Illinois, Jason Hartwig of Decatur, Illinois, and niece Veronica Brown (fiancé Doug) of Mt. Zion, Illinois; along with many great-nieces and great-nephews. He also leaves behind hundreds of athletes whose achievements he celebrated and whose lives he touched, caring for them and bragging about them as if they were his own family.

Dennis will be remembered for his unwavering faith, his tireless work ethic, his kindness, and his genuine interest in the lives of others. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he influenced through his acts of service and steadfast devotion to his community.

Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Monday, June 15th, 2026, at the Illiopolis United Methodist Church. Funeral services will immediately follow at 12:00 p.m. at the church. Burial will follow at Long Point Cemetery, Niantic, IL
