David Spitzer

It is with deep sadness that we announce the loss of David R. Spitzer, who passed away on July 26, 2026, at the age of 77. He was born on June 21, 1949, and lived a life defined by service, loyalty, hard work, and a genuine desire to help others.

Visitation will be 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM Monday, August 3, 2026 at Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Home in Decatur, Illinois. A celebration of life will follow immediately at 5:00 PM also at the funeral home.

A proud United States Army veteran, David served his country during the Vietnam War with honor and carried that sense of duty throughout his life. He was also a proud member of the National Rifle Association (NRA), believing strongly in the values and freedoms he held dear.

David dedicated 47 years of his career to Illinois Power, now Ameren, where he earned the respect and friendship of countless coworkers through his unwavering work ethic, integrity, and willingness to help anyone who needed it. Whether family, friends, neighbors, or strangers, he was always ready to offer his time, knowledge, or support. Helping others wasn't just something he did—it was simply who he was.

David married Carla Spitzer in 1970, and together they raised two daughters before divorcing in 1999. Carla preceded him in death in 2024. Later in life, he shared a loving and devoted relationship with Tina Wilson. Although they never married, they built many cherished memories together. He also held a special place in his heart for Tina's daughter, Marley Wilson, who became a beloved part of his extended family.

He is lovingly remembered by his daughters, Beth Spitzer and Kari Spitzer; his beloved granddaughter, Eyllah, who lovingly knew him as "Poppy"; Kari's partner, Elliot Green; Elliot's son, Easton; his longtime companion, Tina Wilson; Marley Wilson; his sisters, Sharon Gessaman and Diana Gordy (Steve); his brothers, Randy Spitzer and Scott Spitzer (Paula); and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, friends, neighbors, and former coworkers whose lives were enriched by his kindness and generosity.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ruth A. Spitzer and Marvin G. Spitzer; his brother, Michael Spitzer; his brother-in-law, Michael Gessaman; and his former wife, Carla Spitzer.

David's legacy is not measured by awards or possessions but by the countless lives he touched through quiet acts of kindness, steadfast friendship, and unwavering generosity. He believed that if someone needed help and he was able to give it, you simply helped. His family and friends will remember his strength, his sense of duty, his willingness to stand up for what he believed, and the love he showed in both words and actions.

David leaves behind a legacy of service—to his country, his family, his friends, and his community. Of all the titles he carried throughout his life, one of his favorites was "Poppy." The love he shared with his granddaughter, Eyllah, was one of his greatest joys, and the memories they created together will be treasured always. The countless lives he touched through his generosity, compassion, and steadfast character are a testament to a life well lived. Though he will be deeply missed, his memory and example will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know and love him.
