David Marshall

March 12, 1933 — April 17, 2018

David Hayner Marshall, 85, accountant, teacher, woodturner and servant died on April 17, 2018. He had lived a life full of blessing and joys. To God be the glory! David was born March 12, 1933, the first child of Alice and A.D. Hayner Marshall. He graduated from Miami University in 1954. After serving as an officer in the U.S. Navy he worked in public accounting and industry in Chicago. In 1967 he received an MBA degree from Northwestern University, and that same year joined the faculty of Millikin University to teach accounting. During his tenure at Millikin, he taught courses in accounting, finance, computer information systems and business policy, served as Director of Financial Affairs, served twice as Vice President for Business Affairs, and was the Director of Planned Giving in the Development Department. He retired from the faculty in May, 1992, and was named Professor of Accounting Emeritus. He was a Certified Public Accountant and held the Certificate in Management Accounting for which he received the Robert Beyer Award for superior achievement. He is the author of Accounting: What the Numbers Mean, a textbook used in both undergraduate and graduate programs. David was an effective teacher and an enthusiastic participant in Millikin activities. He delivered the Distinguished Faculty Lecture in 1984, received the Outstanding Teaching and Campus Leadership Award in 1992, was awarded a Millikin University Centennial Medallion in 2002, and delivered the Commencement Address in December, 2004. He was active in Presbyterian Church congregations in La Grange, Illinois and Decatur, serving as a Deacon, Elder, and active layman. He also served as the volunteer Treasurer of the Presbytery of Southeastern Illinois. He and his wife Susan participated in several church-sponsored mission trips. David was a member, and for one year was President, of the Rotary Club of Decatur, was a member and Chair of the Budget Committee of the United Way of Decatur and Macon County, and served on the Board of Directors of the United Way, the Decatur Public Library, the Decatur Metro Chamber of Commerce, First Federal Savings and Loan Association, Soy Capital Bank and Trust Co., and the Decatur Area Habitat for Humanity chapter. Surviving in addition to his wife Susan, are their children Judy Kuypers of Decatur, IL; Jim (Beth)Marshall of O’Fallon, MO; John (Stephanie) Marshall of Chattanooga, TN; and Jay (Beth) Marshall of Richmond, IL. David also has 12 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. David loved his family, and was proud of each of them. His sister, Helen Kola of Hilton Head, South Carolina, the family of his sister, Alice Tarnowski, two sisters-in-law, Carolyn Vermilya of Ft. Myers, Florida and Charlotte Hamor, of Hudson, Ohio; and the daughters of the late Helen Oleson, another sister-in-law, and their families also survive. Visitation will be held from 1-2:30 pm at First Presbyterian Church in Decatur with a memorial service at 2:30 pm on Saturday, April 21. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Susan and David Marshall Scholarship endowment at Millikin University, or to First Presbyterian Church of Decatur. "
